Highlands County is home to some of the last remaining scrub habitat on the Lake Wales Ridge that collectively is home to 36 species of the nation’s rarest plants and animals and four globally rare plant communities. The Highlands County Natural Resources division supports in protecting, managing, and restoring environmental lands and wildlife habitats throughout the county.

Natural Resources staff, in coordination and cooperation with state and federal environmental agencies, also supports in protecting, managing, and educating the public regarding Highlands County natural lakes and water bodies. Additional collaboration involves local volunteer citizens in collecting water quality samples and data to support and monitor Highlands County aquatic ecosystems.

The division is dedicated to assisting citizens in improving and sustaining the natural resources and environment of Highlands County.
