Electronic Waste

Picture of obsolete electronicsHighlands County has an Electronic Waste Program where end-of-life electronics (E-waste) are accepted from residents.  Electronic equipment is used every day, from televisions and computers to personal audio systems and cell phones. Many of the components in these electronic items contain hazardous materials such as lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic. While in use, these hazardous materials pose no problem.  However, when these products reach the end of their useful lives — or become obsolete or broken — some are considered hazardous waste. In general, hazardous waste may not be discarded in the regular trash. Instead, it must be sent to a facility that has a permit for treatment (including recycling), storage or disposal.

Environmental regulations are increasingly focused on this area of disposal. Highlands County's mission is to provide our residents with that needed assurance that their electronic components will be properly handled in accordance with all regulatory requirements.
