Household Hazardous Waste

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE

PAINTS
  • Oil base - Oil base paints are paints that require mineral spirits for cleanup. Oil base paints cannot be landfilled.
  • Latex - Latex paints are water soluble. This paint requires only water for cleanup and can be disposed of by removing the lid and allowing the paint to dry. This process will cause the paint to harden. When the paint is completely dry it may be put in your regular garbage (blue cart) which is picked up curbside.
  • Spray Paints - If there is spray paint left in the can, it should be disposed of at Highlands County Recycling Center Monday thru Friday from from 7:00 am – 3:30 pm or at one of the semi-annual Household Hazardous Waste Collections.  Once emptied, the cans may be recycled by placing them in your green cart for curbside pickup.  Full or partially filled cans should never be thrown in the blue or green cart for curbside collection.
BATTERIES
  • Car, boat and truck batteries as well as Nickel-cadmium, nickel metal hybrid and lithium ion batteries are accepted at the Recycling Center Monday thru Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm or at one of the semi-annual Household Hazardous Waste Collections.
  • Nickel-cadmium, nickel metal hybrid and lithium ion batteries may also be recycled at your local Lowe's or Batteries Plus store.
