The following is a list of road projects underway or planned in Highlands County:

Temporary intersection closure on U.S. 27 

Drivers should plan for a temporary closure of the intersection at U.S. 27 between Dal Hall Boulevard and Tower Street from March 13 through March 23, 2026. 

The closure is needed while crews complete median concrete pavement work as part of the ongoing U.S. 27 improvement project. 

U.S. 27 will remain open to northbound and southbound traffic.

Detours will be in place to help drivers navigate around the closed intersection: 

Dal Hall Boulevard to Tower Street: Use U.S. 27 to East Interlake Boulevard to County Road 621 
U.S. 27 to East Interlake Boulevard to County Road 621

Tower Street to Dal Hall Boulevard: Use County Road 621, with access from East Interlake Boulevard or via Plaza Avenue and Lake Clay Drive 

Plaza Avenue and Lake Clay Drive Please allow extra travel time and follow posted detour signs.

Permanent road closure notice 

Palmetto Avenue in Sebring, between Orange Avenue and Eucalyptus Avenue will be permanently closed beginning Monday, March 31, 2025.

Construction is scheduled to begin next week on the Highlands County Jail expansion project. The portion of Palmetto Avenue mentioned above has been vacated and the roadway and adjacent property will be where the jail expansion is to be built.

Barricades will be in place where Orange Avenue and Eucalyptus Avenue intersect with Palmetto Avenue. This will become an active work zone, and we urge all local traffic to use caution in the area.

UPCOMING FDOT PUBLIC MEETING

The Florida Department of Transportation, District One, will conduct two Public Meetings for the US 27 at Sebring Parkway intersection safety project in Highlands County. The proposed modifications are intended to improve safety and traffic operations by enhancing pedestrian features and reducing conflict points between vehicles.

These meetings are being held pursuant to Chapter 120, 335.18 and 335.199, Florida Statutes and will be held:

In-Person Public Meeting

Date and Time: Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Location: Jack Stroup Civic Center, 355 W. Center Ave., Sebring, FL, 33870

The meeting will open at 4:30 p.m. in an open-house format where attendees may view project exhibits, speak with FDOT staff and the project team, ask questions and provide comments.

Virtual Public Meeting

Date and Time: Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Platform: GoToWebinar

Registration Link

The virtual meeting will include a digital presentation from 5:00 pm to 5:15 pm covering the same information available at the in-person meeting. The meeting will then open for questions and comments from 5:15 pm to 6:00 pm.

Both in-person and virtual attendees will have the opportunity to provide comments on the proposed modifications. Comments can also be submitted through the project website.
