Highlands County Water Quality Monitoring
The Natural Resources Division actively manages lakes and stormwater projects on behalf of the Board of County Commissioner. Working closely with South Florida Water Management (SFWMD) and Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) on cooperative watershed characterization projects to protect and sustain the waters throughout the county.
Natural Resources’ staff in coordination and cooperation with Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and University of Florida Lakewatch program also supports in protecting, managing, and educating the public regarding Highlands County natural lakes and water bodies. With over 100 lakes, all entities collaborate in collecting water quality samples to help separate natural from anthropogenic changes exhibited within and among Florida aquatic systems. The long-term monitoring program supports in determining if any trends are occurring in Highlands County aquatic ecosystem. In addition, we are always seeking community support in collecting water quality samples and data to support in improving and sustaining the natural resources and environment of Highlands County.
