Purple Heart County2We’re proud that Highlands County has been designated as a Purple Heart County since Nov. 19, 2013. This designation affirms that county government and the Veteran Services Office recognize those in our community who gave their lives or were wounded in combat defending our American freedom.

The Purple Heart, created by George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit, was the first American service award made available to the common soldier.

The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have been wounded or killed in combat with a declared enemy of the United States.

Highlands County has the deepest appreciation and respect for the men and women who have made great sacrifices in serving their nation and this county in the U.S. Armed Forces.
